1. Mandatory Musher's Meeting:
Refer to schedule page for time and place. Door is locked at the beginning of the meeting. $50 fine for late arrivals, payable before the end of the meeting. Handlers are recommended to attend. All entries must be received prior to the end of the meeting.
2. Race Start:
Refer to schedule page for time and place. All teams must be in designated staging spot no later than 9:00 am or they will start in the last position. Teams deemed by Race Marshall to be unmanageable in staging area will not be allowed to leave until under control. If start time elapses, that team will then start last, being timed from initial start time.
3. Timed Start and Late Start:
"The Percy" race will be a timed start event at two (2) minute intervals. Within one (1) minute of the start time, the team must leave, if not, that team will start last and must leave within 30 minutes. If unable to do so the Musher will be disqualified. The entry fee will be forfeited.
4. Handler:
Handler will be allowed to ride and/or assist during start, down to the ice bridge as stated by Race Marshall at the Musher's Meeting
5. Number of Dogs:
6 dogs minimum, 9 dogs maximum. No loose leaders. No dogs may be added to a team after the start of the race. Dogs must be in musher=s control at all times .No switching of dogs between musher is permitted. All dogs must finish the race, either in the team or in the sled.
6. Treatment of Dogs
There shall be no cruel or inhumane treatment of dogs. (As determined by the Race Officials.) No whips or jinglers permitted. All care and feeding of dogs will be done by the Musher only (except at Dog Drop). Only mushers may assist one another during the race. No outside assistance is allowed during the race, including checkpoint, unless an emergency is declared and judged so by the Race Marshall. Incidental help at the checkpoint is permitted. Teams will be assessed by Race Vet and Race Official as necessary. Teams may not be allowed to proceed until cleared by Race Official.
7. Mandatory Gear:
Every Musher will have in their possession during the entire race the
following items:
A) sleeping bag
B) hand axe
C) one pair of snowshoes and bindings
D) snow hook
E) light (flashlight or headlight)
F) one dog bag suitable for expired dog (sled bag is adequate)
G) race bib
H) current rabies certificates (one per dog) (the Percy only)
I) vet record tube (if required)
Penalty - One hour per missing item will be added to Musher's total running time. Teams missing any of these items at start will not be allowed to leave until they are present. RACE BIB must be worn at race start and finish and must be returned in good condition. Gear will be checked in Eagle.
8. Mandatory Supplies:
The following items must be in the Musher's possession at the start of the race:
A) adequate amount of dog food per dog for the duration of the race (3 days worth is recommended)
B) four booties for each dog
All dog food, gear and other supplies to be used must be carried in the
sled from the start.
9. Clearing Trail and Passing:
Musher setting up camp must clear the trail of their dogs and gear. Slower teams must yield to faster overtaking teams and provide the overtaking team sufficient time to untangle if necessary before following. Musher being passed is responsible for controlling their dogs to provide a clean pass. The team being passed can not pass the overtaking team for a minimum of 5 minutes.
10. Littering:
Absolutely no littering anywhere along the trail or at checkpoint.
11. Eagle Checkpoint:
All mandatory gear will be checked in Eagle. Musher will notify timer/checker immediately upon arrival in Eagle, and have checker note arrival and departure time. Every Musher must personally sign in and out of Eagle. One six (6) hour stop at Eagle is mandatory. All dogs, sled, gear and musher must remain at checkpoint area at all times.
12. Dog Drop:
Mushers may leave sick or injured dogs at the Fortymile Dog Drop. Musher must have at least six (6) dogs remaining in their team to continue the rest of the way.
Musher must supply a dog chain or covered steel cable at least four feet in length, one dish and 24 hours worth of food for each dropped dog. (Excess food left at dog drop cannot be picked up on the return trip.)
Musher must also fill out an instruction sheet and sign the waiver.
Musher must pick up all dogs dropped when returning to Dawson.
Mushers are responsible to leave dog(s) in proper condition, ie. booties and harness off.
13.Sportsmanship:
All Mushers must conduct themselves in a civil and sportsmanlike manner beginning from the Musher's Meeting right through to the end of the Awards Banquet
14. No Man's Land:
No man's land shall be considered the land between the Moosehide Village (approx. the last 3 miles) and the finish line. Within this area, trail does not have to be given at the
request of the overtaking Musher.
15. Finish:
An official finish shall be determined by the front of the sled crossing the finish line. Finish line is on Front Street just in front of the parking lot beside the Visitor's Reception Center.
16. Penalties:
Failure to adhere to all the published rules shall allow the Race Officials to penalise a Musher. Such The Musher so involved may request an informal hearing before the Race Marshall and Race Committee. A hearing shall be granted if requested. The Race Marshall will be responsible for judgment in such cases.
17. Censure:
The Committee may reject any entries submitted for any reason of past conduct.
18. Protest:
Any infraction of these rules observed by a Musher may be protested by filing a complaint within one (1) hour after they have finished the race.
19. THE DECISIONS OF THE RACE MARSHALL AND/OR RACE COMMITTEE ARE FINAL!!
